From The Vice-President’s Desk – TDC Monthly Recap August 9th, 2025

Good morning all!

Just a short email to let everyone know what was discussed at our monthly meeting.

Timberon Development Council received a grant from Otero County in the amount of 4,482.00. This grant will be used for updating all our computer equipment. We are also planning on purchasing media equipment for advertising future events, as well as, recording those events to share with community members that may have not been able to attend but still want to see what we are up to.

Our website has really come a long way with the help of Nan. We had 918 visitors to the site. Most popular pages were the weather, the history of Timberon, and our pool. Our website seems to be drawing people in and that is great news for us and the community.

The pool committee will be holding a movie night on August 16th @ 7 pm. The movie being shown is Jaws and will be held at the pool. They will hold a raffle for two or three different prizes. The cost of admission will be $5.00 and raffle tickets will be $5.00, as well. All proceeds will go to the pool committee to purchase a new vacuum system for the pool. We are going to need lifeguard’s for next years swim season. If you are interested or have any questions regarding our pool, please contact our pool manager, Kathy or Lorie Guiles, and also TWSD.

The community garden is coming along nicely. They are getting ready for fall planting. The fencing material has been purchased and the committee is looking for volunteers to help put the fence in. We have a new Garden Coordinator, Anne Marie Walden, and also a build manager, Randy Walden. If you want to volunteer you can contact them, or Lorie Guiles. The next committee meeting will be August !8th, @ the TDC office, at 5 pm. Come join us and see everything we will be working on in the future.

The event committee held a successful Back to School event, giving our children school supplies. Dell Telephone graciously donated the back packs and other sponsors helped fill them. These supplies went to all the kiddos on the mountain including those that are home schooled.

The fun run that was scheduled for Labor Day has been put on hold. All our kiddos are in school and busy with other activities. When it is rescheduled we will let everyone know.

Our next big event is Labor Day. All activities will be held at the Busy Bee. The event will be August 30th to August 31th. There will be vendors, activities for the kiddos and Busy Bee will be hosting the Band. The Timberon Neighborhood Watch will be announcing their raffle winner before the band plays. Any questions regarding this event you can contact one of the committee members, Lorie Guiles, Anne Marie Walden or Jessica Roberts.

That about sums up our meeting. Remember we always need volunteers!!

Community Education Classes

Mr. David Eerkes and Ms. Joan Eerkes held wonderful classes. Ms. Eerkes held a woodburning class, and from the description given at our meeting this class was awesome.Ms. Eekes used her own equipment in teaching this skill and then everyone in the class got to try wood burning for themselves. All that attended learned a lot and had a blast while learning.

Mr. Eerkes taught wood carving. Again, Mr. Eerkes provided his own equipment to teach the class and then everyone got to try. Ed showed us what he accomplished in class. Ed said that everyone that attended this class learned the beginning of a new skill.

We would like to thank the Eerkes for donating their time for the community. Also, a little birdie has told me that the Eerkes may be interested in holding another class.

These classes are taught by the amazing people in our community that donate their time to teaching all of us something new.

Ed did tell us that Mr. Ottis Price is interested in holding a second class on Flintnapping. The first time this class was held the class filled rather quickly. Mr. Price uses his own tools, so class size is limited. If you are interested in learning flintknapping I would suggest getting a hold of Ed as soon as the class date has been set. Watch for the announcement of the date on Facebook. In this case if you snooze, you lose.

There is a rumor, started at our meeting, that we may have another knife sharpening class happening soon. If this interests you, or like me, you need to learn this skill to sharpen your own knives, look for the class announcement on Facebook.

We would like to thank those that have taught classes in the past and those that will teach a class in the future. If you have a special skill and are willing to share, please contact Ed Carlson and get yourself on the schedule.

Respectfully,

Terri Ratley

Vice President
